us train our new Airedale pups. Our two beautiful dogs had nine pups.

more) are excellent candidates for a K9 team. We live in the Iowa City area.
Do you know anyone near us? Please any information will be greatly appreciated.

NORTH CAROLINA.
Learn training for service dogs for the disabled.
"I am interested in becoming a trainer for
service dogs for the disabled. I worked with the deaf for one year after grad school and
thought it would be so rewarding to train "hearing" dogs for the hard of hearing
and deaf populations. Could you help me find a training program in my geographical area in
North Carolina where I can receive training for this new career? I have learned that the
federal government will pay for up to 2 years of training since my career was interrupted
due to federal law changes."

I have a dog named Mars. He is a 5 and a half year old male (not fixed)
German shepherd. He has bitten two people and the courts are demanding he either be
put down or given away to someone outside the county in which we live. The first
bite occurred in Sept. 1997, when Mars was 3
and a half. I had a friend staying with me and one night she came home around 2:00
am with another girlfriend (a stranger to Mars). The other girl was very drunk and
came upon my dog while he was sleeping. When Mars awoke, the girl was
attemping to kiss his face and hug him (Mars is a very "pretty" long-haired
shepherd). Mars immediately bit her face and couldn 't be stopped until I pulled him
off her. After the bite, the girl claimed total responsibility and I was not even
cited for the
incident. The next day, I met with my vet to have Mars evaluated. She said
Mars was a good dog and had no problems. I then saw a behavior specialist vet who
also said Mars had no neuorological problems. I then saw a local dog trainer who
told me the best plan of action was to
enroll him in basic protection. Mars graduated the 12 week program in 7 weeks.
I was instructed to always to instruct new people on how to approach him. I
was also taught the "Be nice" command. I always followed through with
these instructions and had no further incidents.
Then, in May, 1999, I moved to a new city to open a retail store (xxx, Utah). The
night before the official opening date, I had Mars in the store. He was tied up
behind a counter out of the retail area on his dog bed. A group of teenagers entered
the store around 10:00 pm. I told each customer to not go near my dog - that he
wasn't friendly to strangers and he was stressed out by a recent move. I turned my
back and a 15 yr old girl (who I later found out was on Codeine) went behind my counter
and leaned over him. He bit her face once then I commanded him to release (which he
did instantly). However, the one bite was very serious. I then took him to two
new dog trainers for evaluation. Both said Mars was a stable intelligent dog and the
bites were "provoked." I then did some brush up classes in obedience and
protection and sent him for one week in kennel training to deal with aggression. At
the end of the week, the dog was returned and the trainer told me that she couldn't
agitate him in order to correct him. I then took him to Dr. Meisterfeld's canine
academy for pschological evaluation. Dr. Meisterfeld told me that Mars had a strong
will to power, but an almost
as strong will to serve. He said that Mars and I had a spiritual connection and we
were both very devoted to each other. He said that the problem was I have humanized
Mars and that I love him "too much". Further, since Mars is very
protective and humanized, Mars believes he must make judgment calls about people and if he
doesn't like a person he will bite them without hesitation. He also said that Mars
had an almost feline personality and absolutely NO fear. The final prognosis:
There is a 65% chance of "re-programming" Mars to be 100% safe, but it would
cost $10,000 up front.
I have contacted countless organizations for possible placement in a more appropriate
environment. He is too old to become a police dog and doesn't qualify with the
German Shepherd Rescue Association because he has a history of biting. The idea of
euthanizing Mars is unbearable. I
am willing to do anything within my ability to save him. Any suggestions? I
can be reached either at the above email address or at (phone number). Thank you
very much for any help you may be able to give me.
